Course summary

The BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS is recognised across Wales and England and is often transferable* further afield for entry into the teaching profession. It fully prepares you for the demands of teaching in Wales and beyond.

This initial teacher training degree prepares to you become a primary school teacher, with bespoke skills needed to teach. The combination of academic and school-based learning helps you understand how to transfer theoretical knowledge into your teaching practice.

Learning theory and concepts relating to early childhood, childhood development and education, you’ll be taught by internationally renowned staff at the forefront of leading research into teaching and learning pedagogies. In each year of the degree, you are placed in a different lead school, purposefully identified for their best use and development of the Curriculum for Wales. Adding breadth and depth to your experience, this includes different age ranges and settings.

You will develop a thorough understanding of how children learn, together with the skills to become a creative and innovative teacher who can make a make a real difference to the lives of young people. On a comprehensive range of placements, you will be supported by experienced staff to learn how to plan appropriate schemes of work and consider assessment and reporting strategies.

The Curriculum for Wales has been designed to support young people to develop higher standards of literacy and numeracy, become more digitally and bilingually competent, and be confident, capable and compassionate citizens.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed below, as well as alternative equivalent Level 3 qualifications.

A level

General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM - DDM

We will also consider other BTEC qualifications in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.

Access to HE Diploma

Scottish Higher

Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Accepted

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GSCE: Grade C/Grade 4 in the GCSE examination in any of the following required: English Language, English Literature, Welsh First Language, Welsh Literature; Grade C/Grade 4 in the GCSE Examination in Mathematics or Mathematics-Numeracy must also be achieved; GCSE Grade C/Grade 4 in Science required.

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - Not accepted

T Level

T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.

We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications. We also welcome applications from mature learners.

Additional:
• A willingness and positive attitude towards seeking to improve personal use of the Welsh language.
• Applicants are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check for the child workforce including a check of the children’s barred list. Applicants who have lived or worked outside the UK are also required to undertake a criminal records check in their countries of residence. 
• Applicants should reflect carefully on their ability to meet the rigours and demands of the profession. Refer to the considerations for applicants to Initial Teacher Education Programmes.

Additional fee information

On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
