This pre-registration course aims to develop highly skilled, evidence-based therapists, and graduates are able to register with the HCPC council as practitioner Speech and Language Therapists.
You’ll be taught how to diagnose communication and swallowing problems in babies, children and adults, and design and deliver life-improving treatment plans for those with conditions including autism, cleft palate, hearing impairment, stammering and stroke. You’ll also learn to build successful relationships with patients, understanding the mental health challenges they may be experiencing, and put these skills into practice during placements.
We utilise a diverse range of delivery approaches including:

manual skills and practice labs
placement opportunities
peer and expert observations
online learning
practical laboratory sessions
Teaching uses a blended approach of both online delivery and on-campus face-to-face sessions (seminars, workshops, tutorials etc.)
Indicative study time:
This is a full time course which includes:
10-12hrs per week on-campus face-to-face taught sessions
10-12hrs per week directed study
10-12hrs per week independent study
There are three mandatory clinical placements as part of the course, these are:
Six week block placements
Four days a week (with one day for independent study or attendance at tutorials)
One placement within the first year of study (summer)
Two placements within the second year of study (spring and summer)

Please note to be accepted onto this course; you will also need to demonstrate that you meet the minimum standards of English. For this course, The HCPC Standards of Proficiency for SLTs for entry to the profession state that SLTs must: ‘Be able to communicate in English to the standard equivalent to level 8 of the International English Language Testing System, with no element below 7.5’ applicants are required to achieve the equivalent of an IELTS (academic) score of 8.0 or above with no less than 7.5 in each section.
A minimum of a 2:2 (Hons) degree in a relevant subject. Examples of relevant subjects include psychology, language, linguistics, biological science, medical science and childhood or education studies.
Alternatively, have significant recent relevant work experience (e.g., working as a Speech and Language therapy assistant).

In line with our tuition fee policy, your tuition fee will not exceed a 10% increase on the previous academic year’s tuition fee (subject at all times to the maximum tuition fee caps set by Government from time to time).
New students are required to undertake a Enhanced DBS (criminal convictions check/national police check) and a Pre-enrolment Health & Vaccination Screening. The costs of these are covered by the student.
