Course summary

Our integrated undergraduate MArch (Hons) Architecture degree is designed to help you become a confident and creative designer. You’ll develop strong communication and project management skills, alongside the technical knowledge you need for architectural practice. The course focuses on hands‑on learning, giving you the practical experience and support to grow into an exceptional future architect.

Architects plan, design, adapt and care for the buildings and spaces we use every day. Architecture is everywhere, and it combines so many areas of interest from art, history, physics, engineering, people skills and more. If you enjoy both creativity and problem‑solving, it could be the perfect fit.

Our course offers a seamless journey from foundational studies to advanced professional expertise, preparing you to become an architect equipped for the challenges of the future. The programme aligns with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) Master’s level educational requirements within their framework for “Tomorrow’s Architects”, as well as the educational requirements of registration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The course is taught over four years, and after your second year you can choose to take a placement year in industry or spend a year studying abroad.

The course combines immersive studio culture, supported by a dedicated team of architectural practitioners, with real-world scenarios and research-led learning. Founded on Loughborough’s 100 years of ‘theory and practice’ culture, it blends academic excellence with hands-on experience.

The degree will also allow you to study with experts in their field and other students in the School and wider University to mimic real-life work scenarios, harnessing our internationally-renowned expertise across the built environment disciplines, including construction, engineering, and building energy.

Each year of your journey culminates in an End of Year Show, a celebrated event that showcases your work to leading practitioners and opens doors to exciting career opportunities, ensuring you will graduate as a confident, visionary architect ready to shape resilient, inclusive and aesthetically satisfying environments worldwide.

Assessment method

Lecture-based modules are assessed through a variety of coursework types, such as sketchbooks, illustrated essays, precedent studies, physical and digital models, technical reports, and presentations.

Studio work is assessed primarily through portfolio submission. In addition, formative feedback is provided regularly through pin-ups, design reviews, and one-to-one tutorials, involving both academic and professional practitioner staff.

The majority of work is assessed via coursework with only one module being assessed via exam.
