Build the cars. Engineer the performance. Then go and prove it in industry.

This BEng (Hons) Motorsport and Automotive Engineering with Sandwich Placement gives you everything the standard degree offers — membership of University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR), our student-led motorsport team, industry-standard CAD, CFD and FEA software, and a curriculum built around the Engineering Council's AHEP 4 standards — plus a full, assessed year working in industry before you graduate.

Years 1 and 2 build your engineering foundations: statics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and materials science, hands-on CAD, CFD and FEA work from your first modules, then specialisation into chassis and powertrain design, deeper computational analysis, and a substantial industry-partnered group innovation project.

Year 3 is your Industrial Placement — a genuinely assessed 40-credit module, not an unassessed year out. You'll gain hands-on experience working with a real motorsport or automotive employer; previous students have worked at organisations including Stellantis and Motorsport UK. You'll develop your professional skills and industry network, apply your academic knowledge to real workplace projects, and receive guidance and mentorship from industry professionals throughout.

In Year 4, you'll apply everything you've learned — including insight from your placement — to advanced computational motorsport design and analysis, a sustained Group Vehicle Design and Enterprise project mirroring professional design studio practice, and your own Individual Innovation Project, presented at Innovations Unleashed, our annual showcase alongside industry leaders.

Throughout the course, this maps to the real UWR : designing and working on a single-seater race vehicle, running vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics projects, and tackling genuine race-engineering scenarios.

Graduates go on to roles including race engineer, vehicle dynamics engineer, automotive and component design engineer, powertrain development engineer, and test and development engineer. You'll graduate with a portfolio of vehicle parts and projects you built yourself, a year of documented industry experience, and membership of an alumni network already working across the motorsport sector.

Based at our Springfield site, you'll have access to industry-standard CAD, CFD and FEA software suites, a dedicated vehicle workshop, engine and drivetrain testing facilities, and metal 3D-printing and composite manufacturing labs — all part of a genuinely accessible route into engineering, with support for mature students and non-traditional applicants via The Gateway.
