Film Production with Placement

Do you enjoy watching films and TV shows and imagine your future as part of the production teams that make them? Do you want to learn how we might make sense of films and TV after they are distributed and consumed? If so, then the Film Production BA at Brunel might be for you. This programme shares a common first year with the Film and Television Studies BA, providing you with an opportunity to study video practice alongside modules that focus on how screen media have been variously theorised.

In subsequent years, you'll have the flexibility to map your own route, combining practice-based modules with theory-based options. With many production modules to choose from, you can make this degree as hands-on as you’d like. In your final year, you'll have the option of producing a short film as part of an independent dissertation module.

Through a range of assessments that test your creativity, technical expertise, understanding of industry practices, and ability to communicate effectively, you'll develop skills that'll enhance your employability and open doors into a range of careers.

It’s also possible to study this degree alongside a Theatre degree.

Our on-campus editing suites give you access to Adobe Creative Cloud among other programmes. Checking out equipment for your course-related projects or your own creative ones is easy, and we encourage students to make the most of what’s on offer. On your degree, you'll have access to a variety of high-end filmmaking equipment, including a Netflix-approved 12k camera and our Green Screen Studio.

Studying film at Brunel offers you many opportunities beyond the classroom. Our students benefit from our partnerships with key industry bodies and external organisations (like BAFTA’s Albert and ScreenCraft Works) that support aspiring screen professionals and provide a range of extracurricular activities.

Students at Brunel will be eligible to spend the second semester of your second year on exchange at York University in Toronto, one of the most important centres of film production in North America. The university also offers various short-term mobility schemes for students that allow them to spend some time abroad.

Like most Brunel students, you will have the option of doing a placement year. With the support of our award-winning Student Development team, you can secure an internship that is a good fit in terms of your professional aspirations. If that’s not for you, though, you’ll still have plenty of opportunities over the course of your studies to hone your career. For example, our single honour students are required to take Analysis of Film and Television Work Experience module in their final year which requires students to complete 70 hours of work experience. (This module is optional if you are a joint honours student).

Throughout your time with us, we encourage you to think expansively in terms of how you might apply your skill set and in which part of the industry. We have developed close links with film and television production companies and post-production houses, charities, marketing companies, corporate video producers, and podcasting studios. In recent years, students have completed short placements with Scott Free Productions (Napoleon), Shondaland (Bridgerton), IMG Sports, the British Red Cross, the Beck Theatre, OnSight Post Production, Baby Cow Productions, Rex Brown Studios, NextShoot, Antonia Claudie, CaviarTV, and the National Theatre.
