Course summary

BSc (Hons) Construction Management explores how different parts of the construction process fit together, and how you can manage that process to deliver the best results for society and the environment
There is a growing need for managers who have expertise across construction, engineering and management. You will study a number of construction-specific and management modules to give you the skills you need to manage a range of construction projects. These include Construction Technology, Sustainable Future and Construction, and Data-centric Construction and Digitisation.

A particular strength of the course is the opportunity to undertake a year-long work placement with a construction/engineering company. The course’s relevance and rigour is reflected by its accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Building.

Accredited Degree - Northumbria University holds Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Accredited Centre Status during the period 2022-2027 and are subject to standard annual monitoring, having been judged to meet the CIOB Education Framework. Prospective members holding these qualifications have full academic exemption and once they have gained three to five years’ relevant work experience may enter CIOB membership as an applicant to progress towards Chartered Membership without the requirement for an Individual Assessment.

Extended Degree
This extended degree provides an alternative route to higher education and supports those who may not yet meet the standard entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. It includes a foundation year where you will experience first-hand knowledge of architecture, interior architecture, the built environment, and their wider environmental context. You will develop core academic and practical skills that prepare you for the subject, while building confidence in your creative thinking, problem-solving, and technical communication.

What will I learn in my Foundation Year?

During the foundation year, you will explore essential concepts and current debates in architecture and the built environment. You will learn about real world practices in spatial design, sustainability, materials, and the impact of the built environment on people and communities. Learning takes place through a blend of studio work, lectures, seminars, and hands-on workshops, giving you the opportunity to explore design thinking and develop practical skills with industry-standard tools and technology.

The foundation year of the course delivered at level 3 which develops your ability to study in Higher Education is not accredited. Subsequent levels and years are accredited and deliver the knowledge, competencies, and skills required to meet the specific course accreditation requirements that relate to the approved accredited award title.
