Course summary

This three-year honours degree incorporates key areas of health and social care to give you the opportunity to develop the core, transferrable skills and knowledge relevant to health care, social care and public health to enable you to gain employment in an area of your choice.

Employability skills are embedded throughout the award, with a clear focus on how the modules you study and any experiences you have gained can be applied to the workplace. You will be expected to undertake work experience in a related area in your first and second year of study. This will help to develop real world skills and develop those emerging skills taught in our simulated learning environments.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care

Year One Core: Communication, Digital and Professional Skills in Health and Social Care; Human Growth, Development and Wellbeing; Introduction to the Health and Social Care Sector; Preparing for Practice in Health and Social Care 1

Year Two Core: Public Health, Health Promotion and Community Engagement; Social Policy and Law for Health and Social Care; Adventures in Research for Health and Social Care; Preparing for Practice in Health and Social Care 2

Year Three Core: Leadership and Management of Change in Health and Social Care; Human Factors and Patient Safety in Health and Social Care; Extended Project in Health and Social Care

Assessment method

Your course will provide you with opportunities to test your understanding of your subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally includes practice or ‘formative’ assessments, for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark.

There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. This includes a range of coursework assessments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, reflective tasks, presentations, culminating in the final year independent project. The design of the programme will provide a breadth of opportunities to examine the whole health and social care sector, for example some assessments are flexible as they allow you to choose from a variety of case studies that suit your interest and even allow you to choose your assessment method.

The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.
