Course summary

Understand the role of coaches in a variety of settings
Alongside a rigorous scientific underpinning, essential for current and future employment prospects across a range of sectors, our BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (Coaching) course provides you with an understanding of the role of coaches across a range of contexts.

You will develop practical skills, explore ethical considerations, and use evidence-based research to prepare you to meet the vocational demands of coaching and other professions.

  • The course offers inbuilt CIMSPA qualifications (to work as a sport and exercise scientist or health and exercise practitioner) as part of the degree to provide ‘additionality’, ensure work-based readiness, and improve employment prospects.

Specialist facilities include:

  • Biomechanics labs

  • Physiology labs

  • Psychology labs

  • Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic

  • Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Unit (SPRU)

  • Environmental climate chamber.

Throughout this three-year course, you will apply principles of sports, health, and exercise science to examine and understand the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological factors that underpin the enhancement, monitoring, and analysis of sports performance.

You will also learn how to effectively manage and lead individuals and groups through coaching and other related activities.

On this course you will:

  • Develop your ability to coach a variety of sports through the application of theory to practice.

  • Examine the physiological, biomechanical and psychological principles that underpin modern sports coaching.

  • Learn from experienced and active coaching practitioners who really get to know you and your needs.

Coach across different contexts, sports, and activities
Through on and off-site programmes, this course develops your competency and excellence within a variety of different coaching contexts, irrespective of sport or activity, as you work with students on other sport courses to put your theory into practice.

Coach in a variety of settings, including:
