Course summary
The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences (Forensic Science) offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, a unit specialism which is pathway dependent and an optional unit of study; allowing for the acquisition of skills and experience across a range of occupational sectors at Level 4.

This course is for those who wish to persue higher education in the forensic science field. This is ideal for those wishing to start a new career in this field, or those already working in this area who wish to advance their careers with higher education.

The units that are taught for the Forensic Science pathway are:
Fundamentals of laboratory techniques (core)
Scientific data handling approaches and techniques (core)
Regulation and quality in the applied sciences (Pearson-set)(core)
Cell biology (core)
Fundamentals of biochemistry (core)
CriminaliInvestigation (core)
Volume crime scene science (optional)
Undertake forensic examinations at scenes of incidents (optional).

Fundamentals of laboratory techniques (core)

Fundamentals of chemistry (core)
Anatomy and human physiology
Microbiological techniques (optional)
Sampling and sample preparation (optional).
Assessment method
Each unit is assessed through assignment work that covers the assessment criteria for that unit. For each assessment criteria you need to submit evidence that you now have that piece of knowledge or skill. Your overall performance across all the assignments in that unit is then judged to see whether you get a Pass, Merit or Distinction for that unit.
The grades you get for each unit are then awarded points which when added up match the score of an overall grade for your qualification.
