Course summary

This Modern Languages and Business Studies BA Honours degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge that are highly prized by employers.

Flexible language choices

Study one or two languages and develop near-native fluency through engaging, practical learning. You'll have the opportunity to study the cultures of the languages you choose through a range of optional modules.

Choose from the following languages:

  • Chinese or Japanese

  • French

  • German

  • Portuguese (from beginner's level only)

  • Spanish

You could continue learning a language you have studied before and/or try something completely new.

Business Management

Understand the principles and practice of business management through topics such as:

  • understanding work and organisations

  • marketing

  • human resource management

Benefit from the flexibility of an optional Year Abroad or UK Careers Placement

Shape your degree to suit your personal and professional goals with one of three flexible options. You can choose to:

  • spend a year abroad in your third year to develop your language skills among native speakers and experience a different culture

  • undertake a Careers Placement Year in the UK in your third year to gain valuable work experience

  • complete your degree in 3 years without spending time on a Year Abroad or on a Careers Placement Year

Regardless of what you choose to do, you will confirm this with us in Stage 2 after receiving guidance and support.

To include French, German or Spanish with B or 6 in GCSE Mathematics. Where a candidate wishes to study a single language from beginners level and is not studying an A Level in a foreign modern language then B or 6 in a language at GCSE is required.

T Level

This course accepts T Levels on a case by case basis.

Including French, German or Spanish. Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted. Mathematics required at National 5, minimum grade B (or grade 2 Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 equivalent). Where a candidate wishes to study a single language from beginners level and does not have a language at Higher Grade, then National 5, minimum grade B (or grade 2 Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 equivalent) is required in a language.

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

Access to HE Diploma
Distinction: 30 Merit: 15

A minimum of 30 level 3 credits at Distinction and 15 level 3 credits at Merit is required. Evidence of study in the relevant languages to the required level is also required. GCSE Maths grade B or 6 is also required.

Extended Project

If you offer a Level 3 Extended Project Qualification, we will vary our offer to recognise this. The EPQ can be in any topic.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Offer: 32

32 points with Higher Level French or German or Spanish at grade 6 or above. Standard Level Mathematics required at grade 5 if not offered at Higher Level. If not studying a full IB Diploma - Grades 6, 5, 5 at Higher Level with French or German or Spanish at grade 6 or above. Standard Level Mathematics required at grade 5 if not offered at Higher Level and completion of a national high school diploma. Where a candidate wishes to study a single language from beginners level and does not have a language at IB Higher Level, a grade 5 in any modern foreign language or English language at IB Standard Level is required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Applicants will be considered on an individual basis. B or 6 in GCSE Mathematics required. Evidence of study in the relevant language at A Level or equivalent is also required. Where a candidate wishes to study a single language from beginners level then a grade B or 6 in a language at GCSE is required.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

Including French, German or Spanish at H2. Ordinary Level Mathematics at grade O2 required if not offered at Higher Level. Where a candidate wishes to study a single language from beginners level and does not have a language at Higher Level, then grade O2 in a language at Ordinary Level is required.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

Including French, German or Spanish. GCSE Mathematics (minimum grade B or 6) is also required. Where a candidate wishes to study a language from beginners level and is not studying a Principal Subject in a language, then B or 6 in a modern foreign language at GCSE is required.
