Course summary

Military history is more than a record of battles and weaponry, it’s a powerful lens through which we can understand how conflict has shaped societies, economies, and ideas from the medieval world to today. Our Military History programme invites you to explore the stories behind the headlines, uncovering the human, social, and political dimensions of warfare across different times and places.

This course is your opportunity to look beyond the battlefield. You’ll examine how armed conflict has influenced the development of states and communities, and consider the ethical and political questions that arise in times of war. From the evolution of military institutions to the lived experiences of those involved—on land, at sea, in the air, and within civilian life, you’ll gain a rich, critical perspective on the forces that have shaped our world.

You’ll be encouraged to think independently, ask challenging questions, and engage in real historical research alongside our expert academic team. In your final year, you’ll have the chance to pursue your own interests through a research-based dissertation, developing the skills to analyse evidence, build compelling arguments, and share your insights with confidence.

Whether you’re fascinated by strategy, interested in the impact of technology, or curious about the social consequences of conflict, this programme will help you develop the analytical and research skills to understand the complexities of military history and its ongoing relevance today.

If you don’t have, or don’t think you will attain, the normal tariff points for studying at Lincoln Bishop University, this course will enable you to study for a degree without any UCAS points. The course is delivered over four years and includes a Foundation Year, which gives you a perfect introduction to what it means to be a university student and prepares you for effective undergraduate study. In your Foundation Year, you will study eight modules, all of which are designed to equip you with the necessary academic skills and knowledge to progress successfully in your chosen subject. You will also engage in a series of bespoke subject sessions delivered by experts, designed to introduce you to your chosen subject area.

Assessment method

Assessment in our Military History programme is designed to help you grow, showcase your abilities, and prepare for life beyond university. You’ll experience a blend of written essays, presentations, portfolio submissions, debates, and one-to-one discussions, each chosen to develop your skills in research, communication, and critical thinking.

Written work forms a core part of your assessment, reflecting the importance of clear, persuasive communication in history. Your degree culminates in a dissertation, where you’ll explore a topic of your choice with guidance from your supervisor, demonstrating your ability to plan and deliver a substantial research project.

Throughout your studies, you’ll be supported by lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical workshops, ensuring you have the guidance and feedback you need to succeed and realise your potential.
