Film and Television

Since 2017, Bristol has been a UNESCO City of Film. Our University's history of pioneering film and television studies goes back even further, to the late 1960s, when Professor George Brandt introduced the subject to our curriculum. We've been teaching it ever since, evolving with the industry and staying at the cutting edge.

In our BA Film and Television degree, you'll be guided by leading scholars and practitioners, combining critical, historical, theoretical and practical approaches to studying film. You'll also discover how films are made and engage in a range of creative work throughout the course.

The curriculum starts with introductory units, which use specific topics to teach you how to analyse film and television. From there, you'll move on to more advanced and specialist units. These cover major historical movements, contemporary practices and the theories that underpin, inform and shape what we watch on screen. Our optional units allow you to develop advanced analysis in your choice of specialist industry skills. This could include cinematography, screenwriting or video games.

You'll be trained in scholarly investigation and critical thinking through essay writing and presentations, and work collaboratively in groups to design projects and make short films. Throughout your studies, you'll learn from a variety of film and television professionals. In your final year, you'll examine the film and television industries up close and have the opportunity to undertake a placement or industrial project.
