Criminology with Forensic Psychology (Taught)

This degree combines criminology and forensic psychology to help you understand crime, criminal behaviour and the systems designed to respond to it. You’ll study core criminology and forensic psychology modules alongside optional topics such as drugs, transnational crime and conflict, policing, terrorism, and key criminal justice institutions.

Delivered by the Criminology and Sociology Department within the School of Law and Social Sciences, the course benefits from specialist teaching in criminological psychology, giving you insight into the psychological dimensions of crime and justice.

Designed for students without a previous degree in psychology, this programme develops your critical understanding of criminal offending, decision-making in criminal justice systems, and the psychosocial interventions used with different offender groups. By the time you graduate, you’ll be well prepared for a wide range of careers across criminology, criminal justice and related fields, or for further study.

What will you learn?
The programme is constructed of five core modules covering contemporary criminological theory, methods, issues and debates and psychological approaches towards the causes and management of offending behaviour. You will be able to choose one optional module that enables you to focus on areas of special interest, including institutions of criminal justice, community safety, drugs, youth and adult offending and comparative perspectives on each of these areas.

The modules cover all types of crime, including white collar crime, state crime, digital and online crimes, sexual and violent crimes, discrimination and hate crime, drugs, terrorism issues and policing, as well as looking in depth at the criminal justice system and its different institutions.

You will work in computer labs on specialist information retrieval and gain data analysis skills with the use of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and the qualitative data analysis package NVivo. You will also complete a 15,000-word research Dissertation under the supervision of a member of staff on a topic they choose, drawing on both criminological and psychological perspectives.
