Upon completing this master’s degree, you will be eligible to register as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Professional Register. Midwives provide care and support to pregnant women/birthing people, their partners, and families throughout pregnancy, including antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
Equality and diversity are central to delivering high-quality care. Our midwifery programmes are designed to provide an inclusive curriculum that values and respects differences. We aim to ensure all our students feel valued and included.
The MSc Midwifery Post RN (pre-registration) programme is tailored for Adult Nursing graduates (NMC registered) who wish to pursue a career in midwifery. This master’s programme offers a strong foundation for careers in clinical practice, research, education, management, leadership, or consultancy. Our curriculum is UNICEF Baby Friendly accredited, and in February 2021, we achieved the Gold Award status for our commitment to infant feeding education.
You will:
Learn to practice autonomously, preparing for a career as a registered midwife.
Develop the skills needed to provide care throughout the pregnancy continuum.
Build and maintain a portfolio of personal and professional development (PDP).
This course aligns with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council’s pre-registration midwifery standards, offering a balanced and diverse experience of midwifery practice. Each year includes a mix of theory and practice-based modules, with assessments in clinical skills and medicine management.
Midwifery practice proficiencies will be assessed in clinical settings and recorded in the MORA (Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement). Academic modules are based on the six domains of the NMC Pre-registration standards, preparing you to meet the required clinical competencies. You will progress from a novice in year one to an accountable practitioner by the end of year two.
In the second year, you will complete a 60-credit 'Complex Midwifery Care Project', which consists of four 15-credit modules.

Year two modules:
You will be assessed through a variety of methods designed to reflect real-world practice and measure your understanding, skills, and professional development throughout the course. These assessments include traditional exams, oral exams, essays, and presentations, as well as practical evaluations such as simulation clinical setting assessments. Additionally, you will develop a portfolio of personal and professional development (PDP), participate in workshops, and complete assignments such as blogs and media projects. Group assessments and reflective activities will also be part of your evaluation, ensuring a comprehensive approach to your learning and skills application.
