Course summary
Summary
Film and history are deeply connected. Together, they reveal how stories are shaped, shared and remembered over time.
On this course, you will explore cinema as both an art form and a historical record. You will study film from multiple perspectives, as popular culture, as a global industry and as a reflection of the societies that produce it.
Alongside this, you will engage with history across different periods, building context for the films you study. From classic cinema to contemporary releases, you will analyse genres such as film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary and animation.
As you progress, you will develop critical and analytical skills that allow you to interpret both visual and historical narratives, preparing you for careers across film, media and the wider cultural sector.

BA Film and History is a three year full time course based at Avenue Campus. You can choose to extend your degree with a year abroad or a placement year.

Modules
Course Modules
Over the three years of this course, you will explore a broad range of modules in film analysis, cinema history, media theory, and technological innovations as well as cinema history and representations of the past, heritage sectors and their role in shaping cultural memory.
Year 1: Establish a strong foundation in film studies with core modules in film analysis, cinema history; World Histories and History Matters.
Year 2: Explore early film and contemporary global cinema as well as topics in history ranging from ancient world to modern history.
Year 3: Undertake a dissertation on a topic of your choice in either Film or History.
You will also have opportunities to tailor your learning through student-selected units and an elective placement. Module structure may vary to keep your learning up to date with medical advances.

Assessment method
On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own).
You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as blogs, essays, individual and group projects, oral presentations and dissertations.
You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.
