Studying BA (Hons) French (with a modern language) will help you to become a confident, skilled communicator in a language spoken by over 220 million people globally. French is spoken widely across Canada, Europe and North Africa and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. On this degree, you’ll be part of a multicultural learning community, working alongside academics, and international and exchange students who help bring the language to life in everyday contexts.
You’ll study French in depth while also learning a second modern language from this list:
Spanish
Modern Standard Arabic
Mandarin Chinese
Japanese
This combination helps you build strong linguistic skills, cultural awareness and the ability to communicate confidently in different settings.
Your lecturers include nationally and internationally recognised experts with experience in areas like interpreting, translation, teaching and global consultancy. Their knowledge, alongside the university’s strong industry and cultural links, will help you to explore languages in real‑world contexts.
A major highlight of the course is the year abroad in France*, where you’ll immerse yourself in French language and culture. Students often return with new friends, having had unforgettable experiences and increased their confidence in their independence and skills.
This degree is ideal if you’re excited by languages, want to understand different cultures and hope to shape a global career.
*Period of residence abroad will take place in a French-speaking country and will be subject to any international travel restrictions and/or availability.
