Course summary

Study human biology from a medical perspective. Choose modules to tailor your degree, explore disease causes, and learn diagnostic and treatment technologies. Our expert team helps you gain knowledge and skills for careers in biomedical research, the pharmaceutical and medical industries, or further study at PhD level.

The University of Greater Manchester's MSc in Biomedical Science aims to prepare students interested in careers in improving human health in the 21st century. The programme is designed so that students can undertake a combination of knowledge-based theoretical learning, coupled with laboratory-focused work that prepares them for modern scientific careers in the field of biological sciences.

Throughout the duration of your degree, our expert team will support you in developing a firm understanding and the practical know-how to further your career in the biomedical sciences. Our academic staff will lead you in an exploration of human biology from a medical perspective, investigating the causes of illness, and established and cutting-edge methods used to diagnose and treat disease. You will be able to build the programme to suit your interests, with optional modules (Cancer Biology, Neurobiology, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Blood Science, Clinical Immunology, Leadership and Management, Medical Biotechnology, and Laboratory Quality Management) supporting our core modules (Biomedical and Analytical Research Techniques, Scholarship and Research Skills, and Diagnosis and Management of Disease) allowing you to build an integrated understanding of human biology and the life sciences in general.

Our dedicated and supportive biosciences team will lead you through modules introducing you to both theoretical and practical aspects essential for a career in the life sciences. We offer in-depth practical sessions in our high-spec teaching laboratories, where you can gain experience using a wide variety of relevant biomedical instrumentation. You'll also have the opportunity to carry out a 12-week laboratory project under the guidance of our qualified academic staff, which will be planned and developed as part of the Scholarship and Research Skills module in semester 2.

As well as offering an in-depth education in human health and disease, the course promotes the transferable and employability skills that employers demand. The programme will support and challenge you to develop strong communication and problem-solving skills, quantitative and scientific reasoning, independence, confidence and resilience, and the ability to collaborate with others as part of a team. Overall, we aim to ensure you graduate with the skills and knowledge needed for a rewarding career in fields such as biomedical research, healthcare research, biotechnology, the pharmaceutical and medical industries, and beyond.
