Research in the Department of Physics, at the University of York, spans a wide range of exciting fields in fundamental, cross-disciplinary and applied physics. A student will be working on their own research project, with the support of other postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and staff in their research group and participate in seminars and outreach activities. The department's major research groups are: Condensed matter physics (nanomaterials; photonics; quantum theory and applications; new characterisation methods); nuclear physics (nuclear structure; nuclear astrophysics; applications and detector developments); plasma physics and fusion (magnetic confinement fusion; laser plasmas and fusion; low temperature plasmas); biological physical sciences institute (imaging and quantitation; biomolecular interactions; biological modelling).
