Mathematics and Statistics is a fascinating mix of subjects that will suit those with enquiring minds, strong IT skills and an interest in identifying and analysing patterns in data. The BSc combines a strong mathematical grounding with the latest developments in statistics and machine learning to provide the foundation you’ll need to step into a data-driven workplace.

The Department is home to a number of research groups with specialisms in both pure and applied mathematics. With many of the teaching team actively involved in research there are plenty of opportunities to link learning to the latest research in distinctive and creative ways.
Mathematical Sciences offers a high-quality education that is taught by subject specialists, informed by the latest research and delivered in a stimulating academic environment. Using distinctive and creative methods, we do all we can to incorporate relevant aspects of the Department’s world-leading research into the undergraduate curriculum.
We offer a range of degrees which give you a choice from a wide spectrum of pure mathematics, applied mathematics (including mathematical physics) and statistics.

Facilities
We share our purpose-built £40 million new building with Computer Sciences given the natural synergy between the subjects. It is also home to several supercomputers, keeping our education at the forefront of innovation.
The building provides cutting-edge learning, teaching and study areas, with plenty of space for group work to deepen the Durham experience and enhance the staff-student relationship.

A significant number of our students progress to higher level study following their degree. Some remain within their academic field of interest and pursue higher level research, notably at Durham but also other prestigious institutions.

We use a combination of methods to assess the different modules, which include written examinations, computer-based examinations, project reports and presentations of project work. In your final year you also complete an in-depth project which is worth one-third of your final-year marks.

We normally make offers based on Advanced Highers. If you’ve not been able to take three Advanced Highers, then we’ll consider a combination of Advanced Highers and Highers, or just Highers (if your school doesn’t offer Advanced Highers at all). A in Mathematics in Advanced Highers is required.

776 in higher level subjects, including a 7 in Higher Level Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches), or 766 in higher level subjects, including a 7 in Higher Level Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) and a suitable performance in an accepted mathematics test.

DDD + AA in A Level Maths and Further Maths OR DDD + AA in A Level Maths and Further Maths in any order PLUS suitable performance on TMUA or STEP

Home Students.
The tuition fees for 2027/28 will increase to £10,050. Please note that these figures remain subject to parliamentary approval.
The tuition fees shown for home students are for one complete academic year of full-time study and are set according to the academic year of entry. Fees for subsequent years of your course may rise in line with an inflationary uplift as determined by the government.
Durham University will charge home rate tuition fees up to the maximum allowed by the UK Government. Should the UK Government choose to increase the maximum tuition fee allowed in the second and subsequent years of your course, Durham University will raise tuition fees in line with UK Government policy and approvals.
International and EU Students.
The tuition fees shown for international and EU students are for one complete academic year of full time study and are set according to the academic year of entry. Fees are subject to an annual inflationary increase. In deciding the annual level of increase the University will take into account inflationary pressures on the costs of delivery.
