Modules

Terms 1 and 2 are spent learning about key filmmaking disciplines: directing, screenwriting, producing, cinematography, editing, sound and production design. This phase of the course culminates in a series of collaborative projects, where you experience multiple on and off-set roles within the given filmmaking disciplines.

During term 3, you start gaining independence and develop key skills in particular areas of filmmaking through the production of several slightly-longer collaborative film projects

In term 4 you are given more control over your modules choices as you start to gain more autonomy and experience on the course. This allows you to choose between a work placement module or a collaborative special project, which explores a non-narrative fiction discipline, for example a documentary, commercial or experimental film.

During term 5, you normally write a dissertation – either a discursive dissertation or a project with academic commentary. Alternatively, you can apply for another work placement, accompanied by a presentation.

During the final term 6 you work on a second, longer and more complex, collaborative film project.

Assessment method

Students engage in seminar-style group teaching, tutorials, and work-integrated learning that encourages critical dialogue and collaborative problem-solving. This is supplemented by traditional lectures and specialised workshops, as well as experiences such as screenings, external masterclasses featuring industry guest speakers, and **educational trips. By integrating practical group work with theoretical study, we ensure that students develop the technical proficiency and interpersonal skills required to excel in contemporary professional environments.

LFA utilises variety of methods to assess student progress, moving beyond standard examinations to include research presentations, reports, essays, and viva voces. In practical modules, assessment content can include outputs such as scripts, production documentation, and direct on-set assessments. We place significant value on the process of creation, incorporating reflective work and journals to help students document their development and refine their personal practice.

To support continuous improvement, we embed formative feedback throughout module delivery, responding directly to the strengths and areas for development of the cohort enrolled. This can include critiques in LFA’s cinema, pitches, screenings, and reflective sessions, allowing students to receive real-time guidance from both tutors and peers before their final summative submissions. This iterative feedback loop ensures that students are not solely assessed on their final output but are supported through their creative and academic journey, supported by their personal academic tutor. LFA’s assessment framework empowers students to graduate as confident, self-reflective, and industry-ready professionals.
