Course summary

Our Geography BA offers you flexibility and choice by allowing you to study modules in both physical and human geography. As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to follow your interests through a wide range of optional modules covering subjects such as political geography, health geographies, global climate change and globalisation.

During your studies, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience practical, hands-on geography in real-world settings. Our field trips take learning beyond the lecture hall, giving you the chance to apply your knowledge through immersive, on-the-ground fieldwork. In previous years, our trips have included visits to Italy, the Lake District and Mexico.

Your future is at the heart of what we do. Through employability-focused modules, networking events and expert guest lectures, you’ll have the support to find the right career for you. Our past students have gone on to work in a variety of fields, including environmental roles, consultancy, teaching, sales, advertising and marketing, for organisations such as Amazon, the Civil Service, AECOM, Ocado and Aon (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/studywithus/ugstudy/articles/explore-more-articles/social-sciences/shaping-a-successful-career-in-geography.html).

The School of Geography is a leading centre for geographical research and training. You’ll have access to a range of facilities, including dedicated laboratories, a computer room and a map library – all located within the geography building (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/geography/about/facilities.aspx). Based on the beautiful, 300-acre University Park (our largest, Green Flag award-winning campus), you’ll also be close to central libraries and the Portland Building for the Students’ Union.

Broaden your experience by spending a year on placement in industry or applying to study abroad in countries including Canada, Sweden and the USA. This not only helps you gain independence, resilience and global experience, but will also help your CV stand out after graduation.

IELTS (Academic)7(no less than 6.0 in each element). As well as IELTS (listed above), we also accept other English language qualifications. This includes TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English. Check our English language policies and equivalencies for further details. https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/studywithus/international-applicants/english-language/english-language-requirements.aspx For pre-sessional English or one-year foundation courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations. If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/cele/pre-sessional/index.aspx). Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK. If you successfully complete your pre-sessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

Contextual admissions

Universities and colleges consider more than grades when assessing applications and may make offers based on a range of criteria. Learn more about contextual offers.

We consider applicants solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential – we use exam grades to prioritise applicants but look at a range of factors and aim to give everyone an equal opportunity to show their achievements.

We understand that background and personal circumstances can have an impact on academic performance at school or college. Applicants who are eligible under our contextual admissions policies may be considered for a reduced contextual offer.
