Law with Foundation Year

Our law degree, known as an LLB or Bachelor of Laws, is equivalent to a BA or BSc. If your career aspiration is to be a solicitor or barrister in the UK, this degree will prepare you in part for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE1) or Bar Practice Course (to qualify as a barrister).

All of our lecturers are qualified lawyers, business professionals or academic experts so you will learn to apply law and we focus on teaching you the most relevant and practical skills that employers are looking for. We have designed our LLB to be the first truly professional undergraduate law degree.

Studying law is the start to a wide, varied and exciting legal career. It offers more diversity than almost any other profession, whether you want to be a company secretary, a solicitor, a paralegal or a high court judge. It is also one of the best qualifications for going on to succeed in other careers. You can find our graduates working in politics, journalism, business, HR and finance and more all over the world as the transferable skills you will learn on your law degree will provide an excellent launch pad for these ambitions and more. With our professionally focused qualification, you can expect to learn practical skills coupled with a focus on your future employability.

The degree programme is designed so that the Foundation Year provides an underpinning year, incorporating both academic and legal/professional related learning, for applicants needing to improve their knowledge and understanding of law along with the necessary skills needed to participate in the undergraduate law programmes at levels 4, 5 and 6. Students will develop the critical study and legal skills required to progress onto the next stage of the degree and ultimately that will equip them for further study or employment.

Our course will also offer flexibility to focus on what interests you, with opportunities to study anything from Business Law to International Law.

Course Modules

There are two semesters per academic year. Each semester is 15 weeks long; 12 weeks face-to-face tuition, one week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete the assessments. Students study three modules per semester. All modules are worth 20 credits. The course starts with a one week freshers/induction week. During the Foundation Year, students also complete the 'Shaping Skills for Success' programme which involves one 2 hour session per week during both terms.

Foundation Year:

All modules are 20 credits. In Semester 1 students study:

• Communication Skills

• Digital and Research Skills

• Sustainability and Society

In Semester 2 students will study:

• Foundation Year Project

• Core Concepts of Law

And then one option from the following:

• Core Concepts of Business

• Core Concepts of Computer Science

• Core Concepts of Criminology

• Core Concepts of Psychology

Options available are indicative and available subject to numbers and the campus chosen.

Year One:

All modules are at Level 4 and are worth 20 credits. All modules are compulsory. The modules are:

• Legal Method and Skills

• Public and EU Law

• AI Literacy for the Future Professional

• Contract Law

• Criminal Law

Year Two:

All modules are at Level 5 and worth 20 credits. Compulsory modules are in Semester 1 and include:

• Critical Approaches in Current Legal Issues

• Land Law

• Tort

Students study three options* in Semester 2 in line with their chosen pathway from the following;

In addition, if students are studying at a Campus offering ‘Law with’ programmes, students may choose options in other disciplines.

Year Three:

All modules are worth 20 credits and at Level 6. Compulsory module (Semester 1) is:

And then students must select two optional* modules to study in Semester 1. In Semester 2, students study three optional modules*.

Students studying at campuses who are also offering other 'Law with' courses may be able to choose options from those programmes as well.

**The Legal Advice Clinic is a clinical legal education module where students will be supervised to advice real clients by University of Law LLP. Eligibility conditions will apply to this module.
