Course summary

The world needs people who can address global challenges by analysing problems and finding solutions. This intellectually demanding and stimulating Master's programme equips you with the tools to achieve this, and pursue an analytic career in Economics or take the next step towards a PhD.

Our MSc Economics programme is designed for those who have already studied Economics and wish to deepen their knowledge. You will join a select group of talented students, and our tailored learning experience allows you to tap into the wealth of expertise available in one of the UK’s largest faculties. This includes intensive support from a supervisor closely aligned to your dissertation’s subject matter.

We have an outstanding international research reputation in game theory, industrial organisation, econometrics, applied microeconomics, empirical macroeconomics, labour economics, and the economics of education. You will be invited to special guest lectures, research events, our weekly seminar series, and our annual workshops and conferences on subjects such as game theory and macroeconomics.

Our three-block programme is made up of compulsory modules, your dissertation and optional modules which play to your strengths. Unlike some other Master's programmes, we will teach you how to research, read critically, write academically and present your results.

You will develop rigorous training in economic theory and methods, which are extremely marketable. Our graduates often secure successful positions in consulting companies, research centres, government departments, international agencies, or in the financial sector.

The programme is also excellent preparation for a PhD. We can support you by helping secure scholarships and with writing your research proposal.

Modules

Core modules: Microeconomics; macroeconomics; econometrics; dissertation; research skills for economists. Optional modules may include: Industrial organisation; financial economics; public economics and political economy; labour economics; international money and banking; behavioural finance.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include examination and coursework, plus a dissertation.

    Hi, I'm Ella, a 4th year MSci Computer Science student. I love walks on the beach, ice cream, elephants, our rescue Dog Loki and annoying my siblings (we're triplets!). I completed my third year project on Mitigating Gender and Racial Bias in children, creating an educational game and am undertaking a placement with Burlington Stone in Cumbria developing software for their stone production! I'm not entirely sure what I want to do on completion of my degree but I'm interested in HCI and Computing For Good so hopefully along those lines and put my degree to good use.     Hi, my name is Aimée and I come from Switzerland. I am a fourth year Zoology student with an interest genetics, and using it to conserve the species of our planet. I chose to study at Lancaster after falling in love with the campus on an open day. Last year I completed a placement year working in the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's WildGenes genetics laboratory. At university one of my favourite things to do is discover new coffee shops around Lancaster with my friends. Besides this I can usually be found in Waterstones buying yet another book or at home playing my latest Nintendo Switch obsession!

    I studied Business, Maths, and Computer Science at A-level at my local sixth form and achieved grades of ABC. These grades were enough to get me accepted into my first choice, Lancaster University, to study accounting and finance. However I realised during my first year that Accounting and Finance wasn’t the right course for me, and I decided to move to business management, where I really enjoyed the entrepreneurship module so decided to go into 2nd year on the Business Management (entrepreneurship) course. The current career path I am exploring is business consulting; I feel it suits my personality well and it is a well established industry. During my free time, I regularly go to the gym, and play football with my friends.

Entry requirements

2:1 Hons degree (UK or equivalent) in Economics, or in a related subject. At least 50% of the degree content should be in Economics, Finance, Mathematics or Statistics. Knowledge of Econometrics would be beneficial.
Graduates in non-economics subjects with a good quantitative background will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

We may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification, dependent upon your nationality and where you have studied previously.

We normally require an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 6.5, and a minimum of 6.0 in each element of the test. We also consider other English language qualifications.
