Sports Coaching

Get stuck in from day one, learning through a combination of hands-on coaching and theory. Our 1-year Sports Coaching Cert HE is equivalent to the first year of a degree and is recognised as a Higher Technical Qualification approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

This 1-year course is the perfect stepping stone to a full Sports Coaching degree. If you pass the Cert HE successfully, you will automatically be eligible to progress to the second year of the 3-year degree programme.

If you choose to leave after the 1-year Cert HE, you’ll walk away with a valuable level 4 qualification which will support your job applications in the sector.

Alongside your course modules, you will engage with the 92 Programme, which is built into every degree and tailored to each subject area.

Engaging with the 92 Programme is a requirement for all students and will count towards your overall grade.

Level 4 Modules

Module 1: Introduction to Sports and Exercise Psychology

Sports and exercise psychology helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and motivations affect your sporting performance and/or enjoyment of physical activity. You'll dive into the world of psychology itself and its position as an evidence-based science. This lays the foundation for understanding how these principles apply to individuals and groups across education, physical activity, health and sport settings.

Module 2: Introduction to Coaching Pedagogy and Practice

This hands-on module is your chance to plan, deliver, and reflect on real coaching sessions, in line with industry standards and supporting frameworks. That's not all - inclusivity is key, so you'll learn how to make your coaching sessions welcoming and effective for everyone. You’ll also have an opportunity to discuss and explore different teaching and coaching theories and practices with your peers and qualified practitioners.

Module 3: DevelopingCoaching Active Lifestyles

Motivate and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to embrace a life-long active lifestyle. Learn how to develop activities and programmes that are inclusive, engaging, and promote long-term healthy participation in physical activity and sport. Advocate for the importance of physical activity in promoting individual and community well-being, across a range of ages and in various populations, including those with additional needs.

Module 4: Introduction to Session Design

Learn how to develop effective coaching sessions that are engaging, fun, safe, and ethically suitable for a diverse range of populations. Following a person-centred approach, you will learn to understand your participants needs and their learning processes and development. This will enable you to plan sessions that will maximise the participants development across different settings.
