Course summary

With this European Studies (Spanish Pathway) BA, you’ll learn about the politics and history of Spain while developing the language skills to really understand the nuance of this subject. You’ll spend a year studying abroad, where you’ll be taught and assessed in Spanish, and graduate as a Spanish speaker and an expert in European Studies.

If you choose the Spanish pathway, you could study at the Autonomous University of Madrid, a public research university located in northern Madrid, Spain.

A level - ABB

Must include Spanish at grade B (except for applicants to the Ab Initio Spanish pathway). Please note that A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted by King's as one of your A levels.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 15 credits P: 0 credits

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be 60 credits in total. Ab initio pathway: Access to HE Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits: 30 must be from units awarded at Distinction, with the remaining Level 3 credits at Merit. No Spanish required. Standard pathway: Access to HE Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits: 30 must be from units awarded at Distinction, with the remaining Level 3 credits at Merit. In addition, an A-Level or equivalent qualification in Spanish at grade A. If you meet these grade requirements but have no academic study of Spanish, the Diploma de Español (Nivel Superior - B2) may be accepted as evidence of proficiency instead, if taken through the Instituto Cervantes.

Scottish Higher - BBB

Must be a combination of three Scottish Highers and two Scottish Advanced Highers. We do not count the Higher and Advanced Higher in the same subject.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AB

Must include grade B in Advanced Higher Spanish. Applicants for the Ab Initio pathway do not need Spanish. Must be combined with three Scottish Highers. We do not count the Higher and Advanced Higher in the same subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 33 points

33 points overall or an aggregate score of 16 from three Higher Levels. There is no required subject for the Ab Initio pathway. Must include grade 5 in Higher Level Spanish for the standard pathway. The total point score of 33 includes TOK/EE.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H1, H2, H2, H2, H3, H3

Must include Spanish (except for applicants to the Ab Initio pathway).

Leaving Certificate - Ordinary Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - Not accepted

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal - D3, M2, M2

Standard pathway: Three Pre-U Principal subjects at D3 M2 M2 including grade M2 in Spanish. If you meet these grade requirements but have no academic study of Spanish, the Diploma de Español (Nivel Superior - B2) may be accepted as evidence of proficiency in Spanish, if taken through the Instituto Cervantes. No Spanish required for Ab Initio pathway. Please note that Global Perspectives is not accepted by King’s as one of your Pre-U Principal subjects. Combinations of Pre-U principal subjects and other qualifications (such as A-levels) will be considered.

T Level - Not accepted

Required Subject: A-level (or equivalent) grade B in Spanish, except for those applying to study the Ab Initio (language beginners) pathway.

We also accept the English Language component of a number of International and European qualifications as meeting our English Language requirements.
