Course summary

This BSc (Hons) Biochemistry degree nurtures a passion for molecular science through rigorous analytical training and hands-on laboratory experience. From the outset, you'll investigate how chemical principles, quantitative methods and modern instrumentation reveal the mechanisms underpinning health and disease. Your learning combines hands-on laboratory work with the analytical approaches used across contemporary biosciences, enabling you to generate, interpret and communicate complex biological and chemical data with confidence.

This course stands out for its interdisciplinary blend of biochemistry, chemistry, biology, and biomedical sciences, strengthened by close engagement with the North West's expanding biochemistry and biotechnology sector. These industry connections shape the curriculum and ensure you develop the technical competencies, data-driven thinking and adaptable skillset sought across laboratory-based roles.

As you progress, you'll explore areas such as clinical genetics, biotechnology, and drug discovery, culminating in an independent research project and optional placement year. You'll graduate with the analytical expertise needed for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and research.

This course is also available with a foundation year.
