Course summary

Social workers play a vital role in supporting individuals, families and communities in a range of complex situations. More than 1.5 million people work in the social care sector in the UK, and demand is growing for qualified social workers. Estimates suggest there are over 150,000 vacancies in social care in the UK today (Social Care People).

Why study social work at Stirling?

Our degree in Social Work is accredited by the Scottish Social Services Council. On graduation, you can register as a qualified social worker in Scotland. You'll be ready to make a positive impact on society. Your qualification will also be recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As you study Social Work at Stirling you’ll learn:

  • how social work is applied in a range of contexts, including children and families, criminal justice and community care;

  • the impact of health inequalities on people who use social work services;

Social work is a demanding and rewarding profession. To join this course, you’ll need to demonstrate an understanding of social work and the realities of practice.

For entry, you’ll be expected to have relevant experience in social work, social care or a related field. This may include volunteering or unpaid work. Applicants should also be prepared for professional practice requirements, including disclosure checks and fitness to practise standards.

Gain practical experience through placements

A key part of your Social Work course is two practice placements where you’ll gain essential experience by working directly with people who use social work services. During both placements you’ll be under the supervision of a qualified practice educator. They will be a specialist social worker trained to support and assess social work students.

You'll be supported by your personal tutor and the Student Union’s Social Work Society both before and during your placements. Placements are arranged and quality assured by the University, in partnership with local authorities and voluntary organisations.

Subject Specific Requirement: Numeracy and Literacy requirements evidenced at a minimum by Maths and English Standard Grade 3, National 5(c), Intermediate 2(c), GCSE (c/4) or equivalent qualification at this level. Those without the formal qualifications for numeracy may be able to undertake additional study in the first year. If you do not have these requirements please contact admissions@stir.ac.uk to discuss your qualifications. A written stage 2 selection task for selected applicants.
