Overview
Our world is facing immense challenges, from climate change to political polarisation and a widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. On our BA in Global Development with Economics with a Placement Year, you'll explore big questions like: Why are some countries richer than others? Who wins and who loses from globalisation? And which is more effective at reducing poverty—aid or trade?
This innovative course blends a strong interdisciplinary foundation with a specialist economics lens. You’ll study contemporary issues from an economics perspective – including poverty, exclusion, deprivation, foreign aid, the environment, trade, and globalisation. You’ll examine the root causes of economic and social inequality and explore the policies and processes that can help reduce them. You’ll develop practical skills in economic methods and statistics, master data analysis techniques, and gain hands-on experience with specialist statistical software.
This dynamic course provides a broad foundation in key development issues, organisations, and practices, combining economic insights with perspectives from across the social sciences - including anthropology, environmental sciences, geography, media, and politics. You can explore different world regions and tailor your studies to your evolving interests. In your third year, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience through a placement year. In previous years, students have done placements in South Africa, Uganda, Jordan, Malaysia, and the UK.
By studying with us, you’ll join our close-knit academic community, made up of experts from across multiple disciplines, all housed within the School of Global Development. Collectively our research on Global Development is ranked 1st in the UK (REF 2021).
After graduation, you'll be well equipped for a rewarding career in development and beyond. Our graduates go on to work in government departments, universities, think tanks, consultancy firms, as well as local and national charities.

As someone with a passion for stage and screen, I chose the Drama and Creative Writing course at UEA to develop and acquire more skills that would allow me to succeed in my career path. I am particularly passionate about scriptwriting, acting and filmmaking, so in the future, I hope I can dedicate myself to all of them. Additional fee information
Tuition fees increase annually for all students in subsequent years of study. Any fee increase is based on the fee for the year that you register. Home undergraduate fees, whose rates are regulated by the UK Government, will be amended in line with any alteration advised by the UK Government. Fees not regulated by the UK Government will increase by a maximum of 4% or RPI-X whichever is the higher. RPI-X is the Retail Prices Index excluding mortgage interest.
