Concept Art for Games and Film (with a Placement Year)

Concept Art for Games and Film is ideal if you're passionate about games art, film, and concept creation, and have strong drawing and painting skills.

This degree is designed to prepare you for a career in the exciting and fast evolving entertainment industry. It is ideal for aspiring 2D and concept artists who want to combine artistic creativity with the technical skills needed to work in the games or film industries.

Throughout the course, you will learn from experienced academics with expertise in painting, life drawing, digital sculpting, 3D modelling, lighting and rendering, digital compositing, digital painting, cinematography, and post production.

You will develop your observational skills through drawing and photography, using the world around you as the foundation for imaginative and original designs. The course encourages you to appreciate both the subtle details of everyday life and the grandeur of more spectacular subjects. As you progress, you will be supported in developing your own artistic workflow and creating a professional portfolio that showcases your unique style and prepares you for a career in the creative industries.

All applicants are individually assessed via a portfolio review.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: BA (Hons) Concept Art for Games and Film

Course Modules

Year One: Environment Concept Design; 2D Drawing, Technical Illustration and Digital Painting; 3D Props and Materials; Character Concept Design

Year Two: Creature Concept Design and Sculpting; Game Production Studio; Mastering Study to Concept; Vehicle and Prop Design

Year Three Core : Placement Year

Year Four Core: Games Art and Concepts Live Brief and the choice of one of the following: Final Year Project: Art Artefact; Final Year Project: Collaborative Project; Final Year Project: Dissertation
Year Four Optional: Character Design for Production; Environment Design for Production

Your course will provide you with opportunities to test your understanding of your subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally includes practice or ‘formative’ assessments, for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. This includes a range of coursework assessments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations, final year, independent project and written examinations. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.
