Course summary

Develop personal and communication skills to support people with mental health issues, helping them lead a normal life on this degree in mental health nursing.

Qualify as a registered mental health nurse and develop the expertise to be able to support people with mental illnesses in their homes and specialist health services.

As part of this mental health nursing degree, you’ll:

  • Spend time at university honing your specialist knowledge

  • Practise your skills in a supported healthcare environment during placements

  • Learn how to aid the recovery of people with mental health problems, while working alongside those in related health and social care professions, including adult nurses, social workers and dietitians

Completion of this degree in mental health nursing provides eligibility to apply for registration with the NMC as a qualified nurse - mental health nursing.

Hands-on opportunities
Studying one of our nursing or occupational therapy courses at Leeds Beckett opens doors to a diverse range of placement opportunities, particularly in mental health nursing jobs, within the NHS and the voluntary sector. These placements span various settings, including drug and alcohol services, mother and baby programmes, eating disorder clinics, and forensic environments.

Throughout your studies, you’ll have regular opportunities to engage with mental health service users. Your placements will require shift work and will involve travel across the Leeds area.

The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Men Into Nursing Together (MINT).

A minimum of 48 points from two A levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE English Language, Maths and Science at Grade 4 or above (Grade C for GCSEs taken before 2017) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs. Please note the GCSE science requirement can also be met through a range of level 3 science qualifications including A levels, BTEC and Access to HE Diplomas.

Interview
We conduct interviews as part of the admissions process and suitable applicants will be invited to an online interview. Applicants will be required to provide photographic ID (Passport, Driving Licence) and original certificates for all qualifications awarded to date. If you do not possess your original certificates, we recommend making arrangements to obtain copies in preparation should you be invited to interview.
Other
Students will be recruited on the basis that their values align with those of the NHS Constitution, as well as having the right skills and aptitude, in accordance with Value Based Recruitment, (Health Education England, Value Based Recruitment Framework, October 2014) and if selected will need to attend an interview. Your UCAS personal statement should include: 1. How you have researched the mental health nursing profession. 2. Any experience you have of engaging with vulnerable people with mental health needs or working within mental health settings. 3. How you have gained insight into the course e.g. Open days, reading through materials on course webpages or speaking to nurses. 4. Your personal qualities which you feel are related to mental health nursing, including what motivates you to choose nursing as a career. 5. You must also be able to demonstrate how you meet the NMC Key Competencies through the application process. In your personal statement you must provide examples of how you meet the basic skills required for nursing in numeracy, communications, physicality, relationships and IT skills. Practical Experience: Care experience of working with vulnerable adults with mental health needs or working within mental health settings is desirable but not a mandatory requirement. If you are unable to demonstrate this, you should have experience of engaging with vulnerable people.
