Course summary

If you have a passion for sound, and would like to learn how to design it so that it is seamlessly integrated into media, products or environments, then this degree will help you develop an in-depth understanding and the practical skills needed to design and evaluate effective sound for listeners.

This course will teach you the techniques to create new sounds that coexist with dialogue and music to support a wide variety of media and applications. The underlying principles of linear and interactive media are also addressed, as well as products and environments to maximise potential employment.

Throughout your studies you can specialise in your chosen discipline, and then work towards creating an appropriate portfolio, whilst gaining valuable contacts who could help you during your transition from study to a professional career.

A mix of assignments and projects will give you the chance to collaborate with students on Acting, Digital Media, Film, Games Development and Television degrees.

Studying Sound Design will allow you to collaborate with students on Acting, Digital Media, Film, Games, Journalism, Television, UX and Web degrees.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM

Minimum grades DMM (Distinction, Merit, Merit) in a related subject (Art and Design, Creative Digital Media Production, Music, Music Technology or Performing Arts) GCSE Maths at Grade C/4

Access to HE Diploma - D: 12 credits M: 33 credits

Pass Access to HE Diploma in a related subject with 45 credits overall with minimum 33 Credits at Merit & 12 Distinction to include Art and Design, Fine Art, Music, Music Technology or Performing Arts at Level 3. Maths required at Level 2 or equivalent.

Scottish Higher - BBBB

National 5 C in Maths OR Applications of Maths. If you are eligible for an adjusted offer under our Contextual Admissions Policy, please see the ‘Minimum Qualification Requirements’ below.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*D*

Minimum grades D*D* (Distinction*, Distinction*) in a related subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 28 points

Award of Diploma with 28 points overall with three HL subjects at grades 6, 5, 4 Grade 4 SL Maths.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H2, H3, H3

Grades H2, H2, H3, H3 at Higher Level Grade O4 at Ordinary Level in Maths.

T Level - M

T Level must be in: Art and Design, Fine Art, Music, Music Technology or Performing Arts OR additional A Level in one of these subjects at grade B. GCSE Grade C/4 in Maths is also required.

Other Year 1 accepted qualifications:
UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production - Pass plus A-Level BC or Pass UAL Diploma with merit plus A-Level B
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production with Merit
Rockschool Level 3 Extended Diploma for Music Practioners with Merit

Minimum Year 2 Entry Requirements

Advanced Higher BBC to include at least one of the following at Advanced Higher: Art & Design (Design or Expressive), Drama or Music. Plus National 5 C in Maths

A level AAB to include at least one from: Art and Design, Fine Art, Music, Music Technology or Performing Arts. Plus GCSE grade C/4 in Maths

BTEC (QCF) Extended Diploma Level 3 minimum grades DDD (Distinction, Distinction, Distinction) in either Music Technology or Audio and Music Production.

A Scottish bachelor’s degree in Sound Production (or equivalent), or have achieved 360 SCQF credits, with 120 SCQF credits at level 7, 120 SCQF credits at level 8, and 120 SCQF credits at level 7 in appropriate subjects
