Course summary

Our Chemistry MChem degree extends our Chemistry BSc degree with a further year of advanced study. The MChem programme is perfect for those wishing to pursue a career within scientific research.

This course includes the option to spend a year studying abroad or working in industry.

You'll explore your interests as you discover the subject. The facilities are outstanding at Newcastle. You'll have the opportunity to study in modern research laboratories and synthetic chemistry teaching laboratories.

During your first three years, you'll explore the role of chemistry in:

  • drug design

  • electronic properties of molecules and materials

  • renewable energy technology (solar, batteries)

  • nanoscience

You'll study organic, inorganic, physical and structural chemistry. You'll investigate modern analytical techniques and computational chemistry. You can create your own distinct learning experience at Newcastle.

Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted. Where a candidate bypasses the assessment for National 5 qualifications, a minimum of grade C in the Higher in Mathematics is required.

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

45 level 3 credits at Distinction, to include at least 15 credits in Chemistry. GCSE Mathematics grade B or 6 required.

Extended Project

We welcome applications from students offering an Extended Project and value the skills of research and independent learning that it is designed to develop. If you offer an Extended Project, it will be taken into account as part of your application profile, but we will not usually include it in offer conditions for this degree programme.

34 points including Higher Level Chemistry Grade 6. If not studying a full IB Diploma - Grades 6, 6, 5 at Higher Level including Chemistry grade 6 and completion of a national high school diploma. Standard Level Mathematics required at grade 5 if not offered at Higher Level.
