This course has a practical focus on innovative leadership, and the development of understanding specialist knowledge and skills that are required to navigate the music industry.
Managing in the music industry is a unique career that spans talent scouting, artist representation, performer career management, contract negotiation, music promotion and publicity, event coordination, advocacy, industry regulation, effective business communication and industry norms.
This programme is designed to help you understand this unique combination of skills. We believe in industry aligned courses with practical learning and assessments.
This course includes a placement module so you can gain industry experience alongside your in-class learning.
The business skills you will learn include:
understanding basic accounting and financial principles.
business strategy and specialist modules on managing and leading people.
entrepreneurship and marketing within the creative industries.
In your music industry modules you will critically engage with the big picture of the music industry, from income streams, success metrics and balancing that with working with artists: developing a sensitivity to issues of equality and diversity in the workplace and familiarising yourself with the legal, financial and questions that face managers and leaders of in the music industry.
Who is this course for?
You could be a new graduate or have an amount of relevant work experience.
Whatever you pathway to an MA we will help you to move up the career ladder in the music industry, by providing both a solid foundational grounding in management and a more advanced understanding of the big picture of the contemporary music industry.
Module assessments are authentic and based on real-world case studies or industry briefs, providing you with hands-on experience.
Lectures and seminars are interactive, involving simulations and role plays. You will also complete an Independent Project under the supervision of an expert, who will help you mould your specific interests in the professional field of music management into the shape of an applied research project or a practice-based portfolio.

First or second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in any subject.
We also welcome applicants with industry experience in the media, information, communication or business sectors.
