Course summary

Study Biomedical Engineering at Aston University and develop the technical and practical skills needed to design medical devices and healthcare technologies. This course combines applied, project-based learning with industry-informed teaching.

  • Interdisciplinary programme combining engineering, biology and medicine

  • Applied learning through labs, design projects and clinical contexts

  • Optional placement year with integrated master’s pathway available

  • Development of Aston Power Skills alongside technical expertise

Students have completed placements with organisations including Microsoft, Baker Hughes and Advena Ltd, working in technical and regulatory roles.

Graduates have progressed into roles such as medical engineer and technical specialist at organisations including the NHS and Johnson & Johnson.

Integrated master’s (MEng) option available for advanced technical study and progression towards chartered engineer status.

Distinction: 15 Merit: 30

We accept the QAA-recognised Access Diploma which must consist of at least 15 Distinctions and 30 Merits at level 3; including at least 15 credits at Level 3 in Mathematics units and at least 15 credits at Level 3 in STEM (a) subject units.

Please note that we do not accept the English and Maths components within the Access qualification and you must meet the GCSE entry requirement.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE Mathematics and English Language or Literature all at grade C/4.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Offer: 29

5, 5, 4 in Higher Level, including Mathematics and another STEM (a) listed subject.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
DDM

Any subject: DDM + grade B in A Level Maths.

QCF BTEC Engineering: DDM + Distinction grades in the following units: Mathematics for Engineering Technicians and Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians.
RQF BTEC Engineering: DDM + Distinction grades in the following units: Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems and Further Engineering Mathematics.

Admissions Review Process
All candidates are considered on an individual basis and the whole application is reviewed which includes previous and predicted qualifications, any experience, references and motivation. Whilst the grades listed here are our entry requirements, we understand that predicted grades are only an estimate. We will therefore consider applicants with lower predicted grades if the application is of a high standard which includes a strong personal statement and academic reference.
