About this course
Music and business shape how ideas are created, shared and experienced.
This course combines musical training with developing the management, marketing and entrepreneurial skills relevant to succeed in the fast-changing world of the music and creative industries.
You can build your degree around where you want to go, developing both as creative and strategist. You will choose from a wide range of modules across the Department of Music and Business School, from performance and sound production to music and sustainability, branding, project management and innovation.
In your Music modules, you can perform, compose, produce and research music in a huge variety of genres including western classical, opera, jazz, music for media (film, video game), musical theatre, pop, rock, indie, neo soul and hip-hop, shaping an artistry that’s your own. In Business you can pursue modules in digital technologies, entrepreneurial and operations management as well as innovation and the environment. You will engage with urgent contemporary topics including social justice, education and sustainability, connecting music and business to the ideas and issues shaping today’s world.
You will benefit from the Business School’s close links with industry, as well as engagement with the rich regional music ecosystem and visiting professionals, learning the importance of building your network.

Take part in local, regional and national festivals, conferences, live events and projects, gaining valuable insights into how the music industry operates both on and beyond the stage.
Work in high-spec studios and rehearsal spaces and perform in on campus and offsite venues such as Turner Sims and The Brook.

The BA Music and Business Management is a three-year, full-time course at our Highfield Campus. You can also add a Year Abroad or Year in Employment, extending your degree to four years. Modules
Over the three years of this Music and Business Management course, you will explore a broad range of themes, topics and disciplines, ranging from performance, composition, and production, to community music, education and musicology, as well as benefitting from being part of a full-accredited business school where you will learn about finance, accounting, management and marketing.
Year 1: Exploring the fundamentals of music and business covering topics in management, finance and music performance
Year 2: Strengthen your knowledge in business and leadership as well as your skills in composition, production, performance, musicology and much more
Year 3: Year Abroad
Year 4: Focus on a final project (research, performance or composition) and opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in areas of your choice, alongside mastering your business leadership skills.
You will also have opportunities to tailor your learning through student-selected units and an elective placement.

Assessment method
On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own).
You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as assessed performances, compositions, composition portfolios, creative projects, dissertations, individual and group projects, oral presentations, module journals, portfolios, teamwork and written and practical exams.
You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 6/B).

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.
