Course summary

Overview

This MSc in Data Science is designed to train highly qualified data analysts – or data scientists – to embark on careers in a wide range of industries. You’ll be given an excellent practical and theoretical grounding in data mining and statistics with the chance to customise your degree through modules in artificial intelligence, visualisation, programming, database manipulation and other specialised subjects.

As a student on this MSc Data Science course, you’ll be part of our vibrant research community and have excellent opportunities to progress to a PhD You’ll be part of a research group that has made significant contributions in techniques for data mining and KDD – including KDD Methodologies; use of metaheuristics for rule and tree induction; all-rule induction; clustering techniques; feature subset selection; feature construction; time series classification as well as many applications in the financial services industry, medicine, agritech, and telecommunications.

Data Scientists are highly prized for their advanced, practical skill set and their increasing importance to the success of modern businesses. Organisations in almost any industry need to source, analyse and utilise vast amounts of data to aid strategic decision-making, so you’ll have great graduate career prospects as well as a wide range of transferrable skills.

We have a large Data Science and Artificial Intelligence research group that has made significant contributions to the field over the past 10 years, so you’ll be working directly with pioneering experts.

The research group has collaborated in research or consultancy projects with a wide range of organisations, including: the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and The Royal Society, Alston Transport, Derbyshire Police, Aviva, and National Air Traffic Services.

You’ll graduate with a wealth of knowledge, prestigious connections and research experience – putting you one step ahead of other graduates in your career or further studies. The course – one of the most established in this area with over 18 years of history – offers an excellent platform to help you forge a successful career in data analysis.

Hi, I'm Alexandra and I'm a 2nd year Drama and Creative Writing undergraduate student at UEA. I'm Spanish/Bolivian but have lived most of my life in Bolivia. As someone with a passion for stage and screen, I chose the Drama and Creative Writing course at UEA to develop and acquire more skills that would allow me to succeed in my career path. I am particularly passionate about scriptwriting, acting and filmmaking, so in the future, I hope I can dedicate myself to all of them. I was previously studying graphic design in Bolivia, but I decided to apply to UEA to pursue my goals; however, I still dedicate some time to it because I love it. I enjoy developing myself as a student, learning new skills and interacting with people. A favorite pastime of mine is reading, especially thrillers but I'm open to other genres as well. I'm originally from India, specifically from Lucknow, the city of Nawabs (and Tunday kababs), and relish trying new foods and connecting with people from different cultures through their traditions :) Having grown up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that is the place I call home. The links I have to all these different places has given me a broader worldview, and allowed me to experience life from a different lens.

In the future I don't know exactly what I want to do but I would like to work in a museum or with conservation. I am currently completing my study abroad in Ghent, Belgium and it has been one of the best opportunities of my life, I have been able to meet people from all across the world and study new and interesting classes.
