The UK software market will expand by 8.5% a year, driven by developments in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (Square Root 2025). A Software Engineering degree from Stirling gives you the skills and confidence to shape that future.
Our BSC (Hons) Software Engineering degree equips you to design, develop, test, and maintain software systems. You’ll study:
Programming and scripting in languages such as Java, Python, C#, PHP
Data structure, objects and algorithms
Object-oriented design and development for desktop, web and mobile
UX design
Software assisted development with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs)
Compilers and code performance
Machine learning
Computer game development
Database technologies (SQL, NoSQL)
Computer security and networks
You can also explore your own areas of interest such as AI, web services or mobile app development.
You’ll build skills in problem-solving, creativity, project management and teamwork. In your final year, you’ll develop a major piece of software from initial requirements to final delivery.
You can become part of a student-led computer club. It organises lots of activities and projects for anyone interested in computing science and software engineering.
As part of our software engineering degree, you can get hands-on experience by undertaking a three-month summer placement. They can be with local or national companies. Our placements, internships and industry liaison ensure great networking opportunities. We have links with many organisations including:

As part of our degree in software engineering you can take a module covering professional skills for students. It prepares you for placement applications and job applications on graduation. You’ll work on a career development action plan. You’ll develop your CV and professional social network profile.
You’ll also practice elevator pitches and other interview skills. Industry representatives will explain what they are looking for in their future recruits.
As a Stirling software engineer graduate, you’ll be accredited by the British Computer Society as a Chartered Information Technology Professional. It shows that you operate at the highest levels of technical and professional competence. Also, that your skills are matched by your ethical integrity.
