Psychology and Criminology

Crime is one of the major problems facing society today. To understand the complex issues surrounding it, we have brought together two areas of study that have a natural affinity, giving you a degree that will help you make a real difference. This degree is designed to provide you with a thorough understanding of psychology and criminology.

This course will provide training for careers in health, social care, criminal justice, and other public and social services. In your final year, you can tailor your degree with a range of optional modules, including a work placement.

This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Course Modules

• First year: Core Areas of Psychology, Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Introduction to Quantitative Analysis, Introduction to Qualitative Research, Philosophical Roots, Research Approaches and Academic Skills in Psychology, and Understanding Criminology.

• Second year: Further Research Methods, Theoretical Criminology, Biological Psychology, New and Critical Theories in Social Psychology, Classic Paradigms in Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology in Childhood and Adolescence, and Research and Professional Skills. Plus choose one optional module from: Critical Victimology, Critical Perspectives on Policing, Violence in Society, Human Rights, Genocide and Resistance, Environmental Justice, Internet Risk and Security, and Individual Differences.

• Final year: Dissertation, Become Unstoppable: Professional Skills, and two optional modules from the following lists:

• Psychology options: Atypical Child Development, Brain and Behaviour, Educational Psychology, Effective and Affective Thinking and Processing, Forensic Psychology, Media Psychology, Occupational Psychology, Psychology and Health, The Psychology of Extreme Violence, The Psychology of Mental Health, and Work Placement.

• Criminology options: Crime, Society and Racialisation, Probation and Rehabilitation, Migration and Sociolegal Dynamics, Critical Approaches to (Counter) Terrorism, The Criminal Justice Process, Prisons and Punishment, Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice, and Violence in Society.

Assessment methods will vary depending on the modules you choose to study. You can expect to be assessed through exams, research reports, essays, assignments, practical reports, group work, and presentations.
