Course summary

Stories shape how we see the world — and screenwriters shape the stories. This course is designed for emerging writers who want to master the craft of storytelling for screen. You will explore character, structure, dialogue, and genre while developing your unique voice across formats including film, television, web series, and adaptation. With guidance from industry professionals, you will learn how to write compelling scripts and navigate the realities of the screen industries, from pitching to production. Upon completion of your HND, you have the option to progress to a one-year BA [Hons] top-up degree.

Modules

YEAR 1: FOUNDATION

MODULE 1: CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT

  1. Learn to deepen narratives through effective use of themes and symbols. • Gain foundational knowledge of storytelling principles, including genre, theme, and structure.

  2. Master Character Creation • Learn to craft complex characters with detailed arcs and motivations.

  3. Enhance Scene Writing Skills • Understand and apply scene structure, impactful dialogue, and subtext.

MODULE 2: CREATIVE PROJECT

  1. Learn Screenplay Formatting • Understand screenplay formatting standards, pacing, and structure.

  2. Write for Specific Genres • Understand and apply genre conventions while addressing audience expectations and subverting tropes.

  3. Finalise a Professional-Grade Script • Revise and refine a short film screenplay to meet professional standards.

YEAR 2: SPECIALISATION

MODULE 1: CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT

  1. Master Advanced Storytelling Techniques • Develop skills in non-linear storytelling, flashbacks, and multi-strand narratives.

  2. Write More Complex Characters • Create characters with enhanced depth, motivations, and nuanced arcs.

  3. Incorporate Theme & Symbolism • Learn to deepen narratives through effective use of themes and symbols.

MODULE 2: CREATIVE PROJECT

  1. Write a Complete Feature-Length Script • Expand story structure and maintain momentum over a full feature-length screenplay.

  2. Polish Scripts to a Professional Standard • Refine dialogue, pacing, and structure to improve the screenplay’s overall quality.

  3. Prepare for Industry Engagement • Learn industry-standard practices for pitching and presenting screenplays effectively.

ADDITIONAL COURSES: Free masterclasses hosted by industry professionals through the Raindance Film Festival.

Assessment method

Assessment is through a series of assignments including research modules, hands-on practical exercises and group projects. Units are interlinked to replicate “real world” scenarios and offer the opportunity for students to build a range of skills to maximise employment opportunities.

A level - CCC

Students under 21 years should ideally have GCSE English at grade A*-C (grade 9 – 4) and a full Level 3 qualification such as BTEC, A Level or an Access to HE Course. If you have industry experience, we can consider your application on a case-by-case basis.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - MMM
