Course summary

The life sciences are the sciences that study living things. For example, this could be the study of plants, animals, or humans.

This course is run in collaboration with Dundee & Angus College. In year 1 you will undertake the HNC in Applied Sciences. This course gives you the opportunity to secure an advanced level 2 entry place at the University of Dundee following successful completion of the initial collaborative year with Dundee & Angus College.

In BSc Life Sciences you will have the opportunity to study topics such as:

  • Chemistry

  • Genetics

  • Cell Biology

  • Biological Organisation

  • Molecular Mechanisms

You'll also learn the core skills in chemistry, biology, lab skills and numeracy that you’ll need to succeed throughout your degree.

At level 2, you’ll be able to choose which of our biological or biomedical sciences courses you’d like to graduate in. The course will cover important topics in biology such as:

  • genetics

  • cell biology

  • biological organisation

  • molecular mechanisms and processes

You will develop your practical skills such as laboratory skills, data analysis, and experiment design. This will prepare you for designing and carrying out projects later in your course.

Once you’re in Levels 3 and 4, you can pick modules that interest you, and transfer on to a different life sciences course if you find your interests change if you’ve chosen the relevant modules. Our course curriculum is shaped by the work of our world-leading researchers to make sure you’re learning the latest advances. This will also help you gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the field.
