Course summary
This Linguistics and Modern Languages is fantastic preparation for today’s multilingual, multicultural world of work. Studying Linguistics and Modern Languages together can help you learn languages more easily by giving you a greater understanding of how language works and how it is used.
Linguistics is the study of how language works and how and why language is used. Linguists look at how people learn, understand and speak language. Linguistics has a theoretical dimension but also an applied dimension – such as language technology, language policy and language in education. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the ways in which different languages are different or similar in terms of their grammar, how society and language go hand-in-hand, and the functions and status that different languages have across the world. Our internationally recognised research into language and cognition covers applied and theoretical specialisms.
In Modern Languages, we cater for those beginning a language as well as more advanced learners. You will learn and develop your competence in writing, speaking and comprehension. Throughout the course, especially on your compulsory year abroad, you will then immerse yourself in the chosen language and the history and culture of the country where the language is spoken. Our staff have expertise in translation, film, literature, travel writing, performance, visual cultures, popular culture, socio-political change and transnational cultures.
‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - 104 - 128 points
Level 3 qualifications can also be considered in conjunction with another qualification in a relevant Modern Language (e.g. grade C at A level or IB Higher). Please note: There is no specific modern language requirement as all of our Modern Languages degrees can be studied from beginner or advanced level.
A level
Relevant modern language preferred (not required for beginner's language route). General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM - DDM
We will also consider BTEC qualifications in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Access to HE Diploma
Can be considered in conjunction with A level or IB Higher in relevant modern language (not required for beginner's language route).
Scottish Higher
Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Including: Grade H5 in relevant modern language (not required for modern language-beginners' route; Grade H5 in English Literature or English Language preferred but not required.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Extended Project
Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

T Level
T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.
We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements and accept a broad range of qualifications. We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas. We also welcome applications from mature learners and/or those with other qualifications are considered on individual merit. No Modern Language required for modern language-beginners' pathway. For those seeking to study Chinese: a demonstrable interest in, but no prior knowledge of Chinese required.
If you don't think you'll meet the entry requirements specified, you may be able to gain entry to this course via a Foundation Year route. Please see: Modern Languages with Foundation Year (R808) or English Language and English Literature with Foundation Year (QQCF).

Additional fee information
On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
