IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
Are you ready to play a key role in shaping the world around us?
This course is designed for individuals who want to build a career in the civil engineering sector — whether that’s in roads and bridges, flood defence, utilities, or urban infrastructure. You’ll gain the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to work on the front line of construction and infrastructure development.
It’s ideal if you’re looking to take your next step after a Level 3 qualification or if you're already working in the sector and want a recognised qualification to back your experience.
You’ll develop a deep understanding of engineering design, materials science, surveying, and structural principles — and how to apply these to real-world civil engineering challenges.
If you're analytical, practical, and ready to start building a career with purpose, this course is for you.
WHAT CAN I PROGRESS ONTO?
This course opens up a range of progression opportunities:
Employment in roles such as structural technician, engineering surveyor, highways technician, or infrastructure assistant
HND Civil Engineering — study for one additional year to gain your full Level 5 qualification
Top-up degree at university, leading to a BSc (Hons) or similar in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
Higher or Degree Apprenticeships — this HNC provides a strong foundation for further training within a structured work-based route
This qualification also supports recognition by relevant professional bodies and aligns with occupational standards in the sector.
OTHER INFORMATION
You’ll learn from tutors who bring years of real-world experience — from chartered engineers to quantity surveyors and legal specialists — with backgrounds at major organisations like Balfour Beatty, Mott MacDonald, and Highways England.
You’ll also benefit from:
· Study at our Centre for Advanced Technical Studies, equipped with industry-standard labs
· £118,000 investment in surveying technology, including a robotic total station, 3D laser scanner, and GPS surveying equipment
· Access to the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) employer network, guest speakers, and competitions
This course is designed to give you a solid foundation in civil engineering, covering everything from environmental context to digital technology and measurement techniques.
You’ll work on a variety of technical and project-based modules that mirror the realities of the workplace, including a group project set by Pearson.
HNC Modules include:
• Construction Design Project Civil Engineering (Pearson-set)
• Civil Engineering Technology
• Principles of Structural Design
• Science and Materials
• The Construction Environment
• Surveying, Measuring and Setting Out
• Mathematics for Construction
• Digital Applications for Construction Information *
*Subject to change
You’ll also build essential skills in analysis, communication, digital literacy, and project collaboration — all of which are crucial in modern engineering environments.
You’ll be assessed through a combination of:
· Written assignments
· Practical coursework
· Real-world project tasks
All assessments are designed to reflect industry expectations and help you develop the problem-solving skills needed for your career.
