What is BA Media and Digital Culture?
BA Media and Digital Culture is a three-year degree, or four years with an optional placement or study abroad year.
You’ll explore how media shapes social and cultural life, how digital and internet cultures transform communication, and how media influences politics, identity, and everyday interaction. You’ll develop the skills to move beyond opinion and build evidence-based understanding of media and society.
Why this course
How does the media shape social and cultural life? How have digital and internet cultures transformed personal and networked interactions? What is the relationship between media, mass politics, and governance? Who holds media power, and how is it exercised? These are some of the central questions you will explore throughout your degree.
At Essex, you will investigate what connects people and what divides them, examining how media and communication shape everyday life. This includes how we relate to politicians, celebrities, friends, and wider society, as well as how we define identity, family, and community in a digital age.
You’ll study in a lively and informal academic environment with opportunities to explore a wide range of topics, including media and modern life, digital culture, the impact of computer games on crime, and representations of war in art, film, and personal testimony.
You will also gain practical research training, including designing interview schedules and surveys, and analysing cultural and digital data to support your academic work.
The Department of Sociology and Criminology offers additional expertise that complements media and communication studies, including criminology, social history, visual sociology, economic sociology, US and European studies, and cultural rights.
