Mechanical Engineering underpins almost every facet of modern life and plays a vital role in shaping the technologies that drive progress across a range of sectors, including transport, healthcare, construction, and robotics.
At the heart of our course is a strong connection between cutting-edge research and teaching. Our academic content is directly informed by leading research in areas such as aerodynamics, fluid systems, transportation, manufacturing, and sustainable development. You’ll benefit from access to our purpose-built Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, equipped for the study of thermofluids, solid mechanics, and dynamics.
Throughout the course, you will develop a solid foundation in engineering principles and analytical problem-solving through core modules like General Engineering Tools and Principles and Mechanical Design and Manufacturing. As you progress, modules such as Design and Project Management, Advanced Mechanical Materials, and Professional Practice and the Engineering Business Environment will help you build the professional, project management, and transferable skills needed for a successful career in industry.
You can choose to study Mechanical Engineering as either a three-year BEng (Hons) or a four-year integrated MEng. Upon completing the third year, you'll have the option to graduate with a BEng or continue into the final year of the MEng, subject to meeting the progression requirements.
Our graduates go on to work in a wide range of engineering roles in leading companies such as Toyota, Cummins Generator Technologies, Ricardo (McLaren Performance Engines), Vodafone, and JCB.
This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer. Students who successfully graduate with this degree may, with the appropriate further learning, meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
This course is also CEng accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)* and fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc. In addition the programme meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer.
