Discover how social sciences help us understand how societies and organisations work, and the forces that shape the world around us while developing your understanding of criminological research and debates, and the operation of the criminal justice system.
Our Criminology with a Foundation Year programme provides a supportive and intellectually engaging route into undergraduate study. You’ll benefit from a structured transition into university-level learning, providing additional academic preparation before undergraduate study.
You’ll explore some of the big questions at the heart of the social sciences: how societies are organised, why inequalities persist, how communities and organisations are shaped, and how social, political and economic forces influence the world around us. You’ll also consider how the social sciences help us understand and respond to contemporary challenges such as climate change, global inequality, digital transformation and social justice.
You’ll be introduced to a range of perspectives from sociology, politics, business studies, economics, geography, social policy and related disciplines. You’ll explore how social scientists investigate society and analysis – all the while developing the academic skills needed to succeed as a Criminology student.
You’ll explore sociological and political approaches to criminology, drawing don a range of social science perspectives – including sociology, law, and history. You’ll be encouraged to to combine theories and insights from the range of disciplines we offer in order to increase your knowledge and understanding of crime and its control.
You’ll examine how to approach problems of crime, justice and control as a social scientist before applying your new research-driven skills to real world issues.
From debates and collaborative projects to case studies and applied social analysis, you’ll see how social science ideas help make sense of the world beyond the classroom.
