Why choose this course?

  • Geography and Environmental Sciences No.1 in the West Midlands for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide, 2026)

  • Gain a master's-level qualification

  • Develop advanced research expertise through an extended MSci project, building analytical, critical thinking and independent investigation skills

  • Our 600-acre campus offers a fantastic natural environment to perform fieldwork

  • Opportunities to acquire essential professional qualifications in field identification

Our Environmental Science MSci offers an advanced understanding of the natural environment and the impact of human activities on it. In this programme you will integrate interdisciplinary approaches from biology, chemistry, earth science and ecology to analyse environmental systems and address ecological challenges. The course also provides you with a deep understanding of environmental ethics and sustainable practices, helping you take an active role in protecting the environment.

Initial modules will provide you with a broad and varied grounding in environmental science. You will gain essential skills in fieldwork, evaluate some of society’s main environmental, ecological, and sustainability problems, examine the dynamic systems of Planet Earth, and explore sustainability in Staffordshire.
Building on this you will continue to expand your skillset by gaining specialist field, laboratory, social survey and computer-based research skills. You will collect, manage, and interpret data from satellite imagery and aerial photography, whilst analysing the human impact on the environment.

In your third year, you will have the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of meaningful research on a topic that excites and challenges you. Your research project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management. To hone your communication skills, you will also present the outcomes of your final year research project in the context of a realistic research conference experience.

In the final year of the MSci, you will design and conduct an in-depth extended research project, including formulating a complete research strategy and producing a grant proposal. During this time you will develop advanced independent technical and analytical skills through hypothesis-driven investigation, under the guidance of an academic supervisor and the wider research team.
