Course summary

This dynamic degree prepares you for a career in the growing field of Sports Therapy. You will be enabled to empower athletes and sports people of all abilities to get the best out of their potential and performance. Our aim is to shape confident learners by enabling you to develop the skills needed to excel in your studies and beyond into the employment market.

Course Highlights

  • Gain hands-on experience of the Sports Therapy profession on clinical placements.

  • You will learn to employ the principles of sport and exercise science to prevent injuries, and to evaluate and rehabilitate injured athletes.

  • Be able to provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in recreational, training, occupational, and competitive environments.

  • Learn to assess, treat, rehabilitate and, where appropriate, refer for specialist advice and intervention.

  • This programme is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists.

Learning Style

You are taught primarily through a combination of lectures, seminars, and practical workshops, allowing opportunities to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in groups. In addition to formally scheduled contact time, you are encouraged to access academic support from staff within the course team and the wide range of services available to you within the University. You will progressively build your knowledge, practical and clinical skills, confidence, and expertise under the tuition of our expert staff.

Facilities

Our industry-standard sport and exercise facilities at the King Alfred campus allow you to blend science and hands-on practice. You will benefit from bespoke amenities, such as biomechanics, physiology and psychology laboratories. The library electronic resources supply access to a large number of sport and rehabilitation journals and books. This degree is taught alongside our various sports degrees, as well as physiotherapy, nursing, and dietetics, providing opportunities for interprofessional learning and practice.

Our Connections

You will gain hands-on experience of the Sports Therapy profession on clinical placements. It is a requirement that 200 hours of work placement must be undertaken between the end of the second year and the end of the third year of study. This may take place after the semester two study period. You will have student membership with the Society of Sport Therapists (SST) which provides you with access to their jobs board where current professional vacancies and volunteering opportunities are posted regularly.

UCAS Tariff - 112 - 120 points

A science A-level or equivalent at grade C or above. Biology or human biology are preferred, but other sciences are acceptable. Level 3 BTEC science qualifications graded merit or above are considered on an individual basis.

Access to HE Diploma

We welcome applications from students who are completing an Access to Higher Education Diploma. We normally look for applicants to have studied a course that is in a similar subject and offers are usually made in line with our published tariff point range. GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSEs in Mathematics and English Language at grade 4 or C, or higher.

T Level - M

Accepted T Level pathways for this course: NCFE Technical Levels: Health / Healthcare Science / Science

All candidates must have significant prior rehabilitation/ healthcare/ support work/ sports coaching work experience in a paid or voluntary capacity in a relevant setting in order to demonstrate an informed decision to embark on a career in Sports Therapy.

Applicants are required to hold a minimum of 2 x A-level or equivalent qualifications (e.g. 2 x BTEC National Subsidiary Diplomas) and we accept all A-level subjects, including Critical Thinking, General Studies and own-language A-levels. We welcome applicants who have completed the Extended Project (EP/EPQ) and points obtained from this qualification will be included in any offer. In addition, we accept a maximum of 32 points from level 3 qualifications below A2 that are included in the tariff (e.g. AS-levels not studied at A-level, music or dance qualifications).

If you are a mature student, your application will be considered on its individual merits and work or other professional experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of other published requirements.

Applicants to this course are expected to obtain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance prior to beginning the course at the University. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about when and how to obtain this clearance after an offer has been accepted. Please note, the cost of the check is covered by the applicant. If you have already have a DBS check and are signed up to the Update Service we will ask you to provide the original DBS certificate after an offer has been accepted. If you have lived or travelled abroad in the past five years, we will also need you to apply for an Overseas Criminal Records check for each country in which you have spent six months or more.
Health checks
Applicants to this course will undergo an occupational health assessment to ensure that they are fit to practice. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about when and how to obtain this clearance after an offer has been accepted.
Interview
Applicants to this course are expected to attend an interview at the University. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about the format of the interview on receipt of your application.

English language requirements

An overall score of 7.0, with no elements below 6.5 is required.
