Course summary

The HNC in Photography is the first step on a flexible pathway towards a BA (Hons) degree in Creative Practice.

Designed around the realities of the creative industries and the need for flexibility in modern life, this course allows you to develop your degree one year at a time. You can progress, pause or change direction while still gaining a recognised, industry‑relevant qualification at each stage.

This staged approach means you don’t need to commit to three full years of study from the outset.

The course allows you to:

  • explore your creative direction and photographic style

  • develop your technical and visual confidence at a manageable pace

  • gain a formal qualification at the end of each year

You can step away at any stage with an industry‑recognised award that supports employment or freelance practice within the creative industries.

Based at Blackpool School of Arts, you’ll study in a dynamic and supportive creative environment that encourages experimentation, collaboration and visual exploration.

You’ll benefit from:

  • a multi‑disciplinary curriculum covering a wide range of photographic practices

  • opportunities to collaborate with students across other creative programmes

  • small class sizes and personalised tutorial support

This studio‑based approach supports creative risk‑taking and the development of a confident photographic voice.

Alongside developing your photographic practice, you’ll build practical skills that support a sustainable career in the creative industries.

You’ll learn how to:

  • apply a range of photographic techniques and processes using traditional and digital tools

  • produce professional‑quality visual work using industry‑standard equipment and software

  • manage multiple creative projects effectively

  • build enterprise skills, including self‑promotion, portfolio development and networking

  • work collaboratively, reflecting real‑world creative practice

  • stay informed about industry trends and continue developing your skills

Learning is hands‑on and practice‑led, helping you turn ideas into considered, professional outcomes.

You’ll work in excellent photography facilities, with access to:

  • professional photography studios

  • traditional darkrooms and photographic equipment

  • industry‑standard Adobe software

  • 3D design and technology suites

You’ll be taught by experienced tutors and visiting lecturers who are active in the creative industries, offering practical guidance and current industry insight.

Whether your ambition is to progress to a full honours degree, work as a freelance photographer or move into creative employment, this HNC provides a strong foundation.

It’s designed to support your development as a skilled, adaptable and visually confident photographer, ready to take the next step in contemporary creative practice.
