Course summary
This degree course will enable you to develop a personal creative practice as a writer, offering imaginative approaches in a variety of forms, while gaining skills and critical insights in modern languages and cultures. It offers an exploration of the techniques and contexts of the novel, the short story, poetry, and writing for performance and media.
Guided by published writers, poets and researchers, you will study and practise creative writing across a range of genres, forms, and media, from the traditional through to the experimental. You will discover your unique strengths as a writer and find new ways to engage creatively with different audiences.
Our cross-disciplinary Creative Writing and Modern Languages degree will give you to opportunity to learn about the cultures and societies of the countries in which your chosen language is spoken, whilst also helping you to hone you own creative voice as a writer. The compulsory year abroad is fantastic preparation for today’s multilingual, multicultural world of work. The experience can inform, inspire and influence your creative writing whilst improving your language skills.
‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - 104 - 128 points
Level 3 qualifications can also be considered in conjunction with another qualification in a relevant Modern Language (e.g. grade C at A level or IB Higher). Please note: There is no specific modern language requirement as all of our Modern Languages degrees can be studied from beginner or advanced level.
A level
Relevant modern language preferred (not required for beginner's language route). General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM - DDM
We will also consider other BTEC qualifications in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Access to HE Diploma
Accepted. Can be considered in conjunction with A level or IB Higher in relevant modern language (not required for beginner's language route).
Scottish Higher
Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Including grade H5 in relevant modern language. (No modern language required for beginner's language route.)
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Extended Project
Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

T Level
T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.
We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements and accept a broad range of qualifications. We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas. We also welcome applications from mature learners.
No Modern Language required for language-beginners' pathway. For those seeking to study Chinese: a demonstrable interest in, but no prior knowledge of Chinese required.
If you don't think you'll meet the entry requirements specified, you may be able to gain entry to this course via a Foundation Year route. Please see: Modern Languages with Foundation Year (R808).

Additional fee information
On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
