Innovate and thrive as a music producer, film and games composer, sound designer or audio professional on our industry focused degree.
Our graduates make significant contributions to the UK music scene, and include artist-producers signed to labels such as Shogun, Hospital Records, Sony, XL, UKF and Hessle Audio.
We have graduates that work in Film and TV Sound and Composition on internationally acclaimed series and films, including graduates that are now BAFTA winners and nominees for their Audio Post Production.
Specialise or combine areas of Music Production, Composition, Sound Design, and Audio Production for Games, Film and TV through a course that supports your creative and industry aspirations.
Creative Sound and Music Production fuses audio production, composition, sound design, and the creative exploration of sound and audio technology in these core areas:
Contemporary urban, dance and commercial music creation and production
Mixing and Mastering
Composition for film, TV and games
Audio Production and post-production for film and TV
Sound Design and audio implementation for the games industry
The course explores concepts and techniques in produced music and sound design that lead to the creation of narrative and 'meaning' for the listener. The industry experience of our teaching team enables us to mentor you toward high-level industry skills and insight.
Year one
We encourage you to explore and grow your existing creative activities alongside important foundational practical and interpretive skills. This is supported in topics such as audio recording and production, sound design, critical listening, and the exploration of the relationship between music and sound to picture.
Year two
Take your skills and creativity into the professional arena, complimented by a series of creative and industry guest lectures, with the opportunity to engage with external collaboration, an internship or an industry placement. You’re guided toward greater technical competence in the core areas of sound production, critical listening and sound design. We also introduce multimedia skills that will open the opportunity of creative multidisciplinary projects and support the creation of powerful self-marketing and promotional tools.
Year three
The final year of the degree offers industry level optional pathways including the areas of Sonic Signature, Game Audio, Composition for Media, Sonic Performance, Audio Post Production, and Audio Visual Practice, from which you can select a specialised route to support your creative and professional aspirations.
You will also get individual support in designing and managing a larger scale creative project of your choice, which we offer as an alternative to a traditional dissertation. All of the assignments in this final year are designed to be the foundation of your professional portfolio, and many are submitted as public facing online content.
A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where you undertake a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between your second and final years of undergraduate study. You can engage in multiple placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) yourself, with support from the Careers team.
